My Time in Yucai

                              Anna Philpott

I remember arriving at Yucai in the summer of 2014. I was only 11 years old then and going into Junior 2. Although I had moved to China just a few months before, I felt welcome and accepted at the school because of the small class sizes, which made us students feel a lot closer to one another. The curriculum was a little difficult to adjust to at first, seeing as I was from Great Britain, but I soon got used to it.

Something I always liked about our school is the way the teachers always try to make everyone feel included in the lessons. This fact has not changed since I first started here four and a half years ago. Of course, this is partly due to the class sizes, but I always get the feeling that the teachers really care about our education and want us to learn and make contributions in class.

One of the most incredible things that happened while I have been here is the complete renovation of the International Section’s building. We have a new lab, an air purifying system, and everything just looks a lot more modern. It looks like a completely new school! As well as this, our campus itself is quite beautiful, especially in autumn when all the gingko trees are turning yellow.

I have created many happy memories with my classmates this year, including school trips, but most of them have been created right in the school. As I previously mentioned, the class sizes are so very small that we all feel like a family. Although none of my original classmates from Junior 2 remain, I have made many new friends this year that I could not imagine never meeting.

A little tradition our Senior homeroom has is going out for meals together every semester. I think it helps bring us closer together, and I always enjoy these. So far, we have been to a Mexican restaurant, an Indian restaurant, and more. It can be hard to work out the scheduling and find a day that everyone is available on, but it always works out in the end. Again, I thank the small class sizes the school has for the closeness we feel to one another.

My favorite class this semester was probably Literature class with Chris. Although he is not here anymore, I found the discussion-based lessons a lot of fun. Everyone was given time to talk and an opportunity to speak their mind in the class, no matter what they believed.

Finally, the school’s international atmosphere is one of the most beneficial things about it. Learning how to communicate with others from different cultures, surrounded by peers from all around the world, has helped me grow as a person and find unique ways to communicate despite language barriers, and I am ever grateful for that.

Over the past four and a half years, and now at almost 16 years old, I have made so many great memories with friends, connected with so many people, and learned so much at the NEYC International Section. I am thankful for the opportunity to attend this prestigious school and learn much more than just textbook knowledge from studying here.
